The Camper & Nicholsons moniker is most associated with the famed brokerage and charter firm, but it’s also the name of a UK-based shipyard with roots in the 18th century. Camper & Nicholsons Yachting is the yard behind the famed J-Class sailing yachts Shamrock V, Endeavour, and Velsheda, and the Norwegian royal motoryacht Norge, among others. It has been under the ownership of Nautor’s Swan for about a decade, building production-size sailing yachts and commuters for even longer. However, Camper & Nicholsons Yachting is re-entering the megayacht market in a partnership with ISA Yachts. ISA Yachts will build a new megayacht series termed Filante 42 for Camper & Nicholsons Yachting.
Federico Bennewitz, Camper & Nicholsons Yachting’s CEO, says ISA Yachts was selected for its experience over the past decade in building and delivering high-end, reliable megayachts. A steel-hulled displacement yacht with a draft of 8’4” (2.55 meters), LOA of 137’1” (41.8 meters), and beam of 28’5” (8.7 meters), the Filante 42 also comes in under the 500-ton mark for displacement, simplifying compliance with regulations. The size and displacement are especially noteworthy: The Camper & Nicholsons Yachting team wanted a megayacht capable of ocean-crossings yet still somewhat compact. In turn, the so-called smaller size permits access to far more marinas than the super-size superyachts do.
Styling-wise, the megayacht bears traditional lines, created by Camper & Nicholsons Yachting’s in-house team. Horacio Bozzo Design was tapped for naval architecture and engineering. Twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT diesels should allow a top end of 13½ knots. As for the interior, buyers will be able to put their own imprint on it, with Michele Bonan, the Italian architect behind several Nautor’s Swan sailing yachts as well as the Yas Yacht Club in Abu Dhabi, among other land-based projects. A little more than 5,920 square feet (550 square meters) of space is available for relaxation, dining, and more. Two tenders, a PWC, and of course a rescue tender will all be supplied, too.
ISA Yachts and Camper & Nicholsons Yachting are set to build more than just the Filante 42, because she’s being called the flagship of a range. Earlier this year one media report had Camper & Nicholsons Yachting examining the 105-foot (32-meter) range, but we’ll have to wait and see until official word is released.
